How to Know When Your Bike Needs a Tune-Up
One of the most common questions we get at the shop is some version of: “Do I actually need a tune-up, or am I just being paranoid?” It’s a fair question. A bike tune up near me is something a lot of riders search for without really knowing what they’re looking for. So let me break it down the way I’d explain it to anyone who walks in the door.
The short answer is: if you’re asking, you probably need one. But here are the specific things to look for.
The Shifting Feels Off
If you’re clicking through the gears and it’s hesitating, skipping, or not dropping cleanly into the ring you want — that’s a cable tension issue, and it only gets worse. Cables stretch over time. A quick adjustment takes minutes, but if you leave it, you’ll start wearing out your cassette and chainrings faster than you should.
The Brakes Are Soft or Noisy
Squealing brakes are annoying. Soft brakes are dangerous. If you’re squeezing the lever more than halfway before you feel real stopping power, your pads are either worn down or your cables need tightening. If it’s disc brakes making noise, it’s usually contamination or a pad that’s glazed over. Either way, worth getting looked at before you’re descending into an intersection.
The Chain Is Due
This one’s invisible to most riders. Chains stretch — not in the rubber-band sense, but the pins and rollers wear, and a worn chain starts eating your cassette. We measure chain wear with a simple tool. If it’s past the wear limit, swap the chain now and your drivetrain lasts much longer. Ignore it, and you’re replacing cassette and chainrings too.
It’s Been a Year (or You Don’t Remember When)
If you’re riding regularly — a few times a week — a once-a-year tune-up keeps everything dialed. If you can’t remember the last time someone looked at your bike, that’s your answer. Cables fray, bearings get gritty, and small problems compound. Catching them early is always cheaper than fixing them after something breaks on a ride.
It Just Doesn’t Feel Right
Trust your gut on this one. If the bike feels sluggish, or something sounds different than it used to, bring it in. You know your bike better than anyone. Nine times out of ten when someone says something feels off, they’re right.
We do tune-ups at every level — from a basic check-and-adjust to a full overhaul for bikes that have been through serious miles. If you’re not sure what you need, stop by and we’ll take a look for free and tell you honestly what we see. Check out our full service menu to see what’s involved.
